Grazing Forage Crops

GrazFeed may be used to estimate animal productivity from forage crops such as turnips, kale or rape by entering their characteristics in the Pasture dialogue box.

Weight: An estimate is required of the weight of green material (tonnes dry matter/ha), although above about 2 t/ha accuracy is not important. In many cases, the height of the crop will need to be increased above the default value shown on the Pasture2 screen.

Quality: Average values for dry matter digestibility (DMD) and protein content (CP) are shown in the table below. Be aware that the quality of the feed will fall the longer the animals graze the crop, as the higher quality leaf is removed.

However, in the case of turnips, the roots are of higher nutritional value than the leaves. On the first few days into the crop, most of the intake may be from the leaves, before the animals start on the roots. An average digestibility should be estimated, depending on the proportion of leaf to root.
