GrazFeed and Feeding Whole Grain to Cattle When feeding whole grain to cattle, some of it will be excreted undigested in the faeces and will, therefore, be of no nutritional value to the animals. When whole grain is fed to cattle, a significant proportion of it may pass straight through to the faeces. This applies particularly to wheat, barley and sorghum fed at production levels. Much less loss occurs with oats and none with maize and there is little loss with any grain offered at drought-feeding levels. The problem does not occur if the grain is rolled or cracked before feeding; nor does it occur when whole grain is fed to sheep, because sheep crack all the grain before it leaves the rumen. If you wish to feed whole grain to cattle using a GrazFeed simulation, there is an appropriate whole grain item in the program's "More Feeds" list of available feeds. GrazFeed will make the appropriate adjustments to the value of the grain, based on what experimental information is available. If you are feeding sheep, these adjustments are not needed.
